Working with our partners to prepare our communities for a changing climate

The weather in the UK is changing.

We all feel its impact.

Due to climate change we’re experiencing warmer and wetter conditions which has an enormous impact on our work. Our coasts suffer from erosion caused by increasingly violent storms and our towns and cities experience catastrophic flooding; devastating for residents and businesses.

And unfortunately, the climate models suggest that it’s only going to get worse.

At BAM, we believe that only by working together with our partners, are we able to predict, plan and build the right infrastructure to tackle these challenges head on, and to allow our communities to thrive.

In my role as Framework Manager, I have built a strong relationship with the Environment Agency, a key client for BAM, whose flood defence schemes are profoundly important for communities and the environment alike. I believe that the key to achieving successful outcomes lies in clear communication, fostering relationships and aligning our values where we can.

Climate Adaption - BAM

At BAM, we understand the importance of delivering high quality infrastructure that can stand up to intensive environmental stress, whilst also demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and biodiversity. For example, at the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase II, not only have we pioneered ground-breaking technology with our flood defences, built over a 1.4km stretch of the River Aire, we have also planted over 10,000 trees to help the natural ecosystem to flourish.

This approach is consistent across many of our projects spanning the UK & Ireland. By working together to address obstacles and share knowledge we help to enhance our collective expertise and create meaningful change for our coasts, towns and cities.  This benefits us at BAM, our partners, the communities we serve and the natural ecosystems we aim to protect.

I take great pride in the relationships I have forged with partners such as the Environment Agency and our delivery partners. These connections matter to me both personally and professionally and they significantly enhance my daily work.

I truly believe that by working together, we’re able to build a sustainable tomorrow and take on any challenges that come our way.
